Pixel Art Generator: Image to Pixel Art

Choose a picture and it becomes pixel art on the grid below. Pick how many pixels, how colours are sampled and whether to limit them to a palette, then touch it up by hand.

How the conversion works

The picture is divided into a grid, and each square becomes one pixel. Average blends every pixel inside the square into one colour, which suits photos and gradients. Nearest takes the colour at the centre of each square, which keeps hard edges and is best for logos, screenshots and art that is already pixel art at a larger size. Squares that are mostly transparent stay transparent.

Limit to current palette swaps every colour for the closest one in the palette you have selected, such as PICO-8 or the four Game Boy greens. That gives a retro look and makes the result easier to edit, though detail that depended on in-between colours can disappear.

Getting a good result

A converter can only shrink a picture; it can't decide what matters. Crop close to the subject first, start at 32 or 48 pixels, and expect to fix outlines and eyes by hand with the pencil: that cleanup is most of what makes pixel art look drawn rather than shrunk. Every conversion is one undo step, so you can try settings freely. Your image is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
